Derek shot up in bed, his heart jackhammering. He had no idea why he’d awoken. He was on his feet then running to Corey the instant a piercing scream sounded from the guest room. Derek burst into it, the door slamming against the wall as he did. He flicked on the overhead light even as he propelled his body forward, desperate to reach Corey.

Corey yelled out ‘no’ over and over as he struggled in the tangle of the thick blanket Derek had placed on him earlier. Derek dropped on the bed next to him, reaching out to free him from the covering as Corey flailed.

“Shh, shh. It’s okay Corey. It’s okay. It’s Derek, Corey. Derek. No one can hurt you, I’ve got you. I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

Corey’s struggles lessened, and he finally allowed Derek to enfold him in an embrace. Derek pulled Corey on his lap, reclining against the headboard as he did, trying to catch his own breath. Derek rocked him as he made shushing noises. The horrific sounds Corey had made tore at his heart. Corey still trembled in his arms, his clothing dampened with sweat as he panted.

“I can’t, can’t…” Corey’s distress was clear. “Breathe. Can’t breathe.”

“Take it easy. Deep breaths.”

“Can’t.” Corey’s eyes widened in fear.

“Yes you can. With me, kid. Watch.”

Derek inhaled deeply then exhaled slowly. He repeated it, holding Corey’s gaze until he’d calmed and was breathing normally again. Corey melted against Derek and a measure of relief poured through him. Derek continued to pet him, but stayed silent, waiting for Corey to decide if he wanted to offer up an explanation or not.

“I’m sorry.”

Derek gave him a gentle squeeze. “There’s nothing to be sorry for.”

“I woke you up. I didn’t mean to.”

“Of course you didn’t. You can’t control what demons haunt your dreams.”

Corey tensed at Derek’s words and he regretted them. He’d never been involved with a man who’d suffered any real trauma. It’d been a discussion many times over the years with various subs he’d encountered at clubs and Gavin and Josh had dealt with their fair share of damaged boys. But Derek had never been emotionally attached to anyone in that position before.

Emotionally attached?

Corey nodded his head against Derek’s chest. It was then that Derek remembered he was naked. He had no idea whether Corey was aware of it or not—part of the blanket was still wedged between them.

“Demons. That’s the perfect way to describe it.”

Derek kissed the top of Corey’s head, he had to. He still wondered if he could get a hall pass from Josh and Gavin for beating the ever-loving shit out of Corey’s ex-Dom. He had no doubt that the mystery asshole was responsible for Corey’s night terrors.

Corey snuggled closer, running one hand idly through Derek’s abundant chest hairs. It didn’t feel like a sexual gesture. It spoke more of the need for connection. Derek held Corey in silence long enough that he hoped Corey might’ve drifted off to sleep again. He’d become drowsy too when Corey’s soft voice roused him.
